100 students from Southampton Secondary schools converged on Southampton Solent University in January 2008 for the first ever inter-school Media Challenge.
.
The Challenge, entitled “What’s Your Problem?", saw the students designing a Public Service Announcement on an issue that affected their local community, which enabled them to acquire a higher sense of citizenship by helping them to gain a better understanding of their local community issues and problems.
.
The Challenge, organised by Solent Skill Quest, also highlighted the awareness of diversity within the media industry and the different vocational opportunities available to them within the different areas, such as television, radio and print. The Challenge also demonstrated the key role media plays in influencing young people’s attitudes about the world around them.

Carol Skelton a Programme Project Manager from Solent Skill Quest, said “The students left the event with an increased knowledge of the world of business and the confidence to initiate and develop their ideas in the future."
.
The students had access to Southampton Solent University’s state of the art, television studio, and Original 106 FM hosted a live radio broadcast in the afternoon. Students were also able to draw from the expertise from staff from various influential businesses from the Southampton area, who had given their time to help facilitate the event.
