Since the Thornhill Skills Centre opened for business last year, it has seen over 275 14-16 year olds taking courses in Construction, Motor Vehicle Maintenance, and Hair & Beauty from Thornhill and its surrounding areas.
The Centre enables those learners that are either disengaged with school, or those that prefer practical subjects, to work towards nationally recognised qualifications in order to prepare themselves for the world of work or college, upon leaving school.
The two-year Motor Vehicle course has just had its first 12 learners complete their full Level 1 Diploma, with another 12 completing their first year certificate and ready to start their Diploma next year.
In Construction, the majority of those learners taking the course are well on their way to achieving their City & Guilds Certificate in Basic Construction Skills, having achieved four units and ready to start their second four next year.
The Hair & Beauty students saw 34 learners take the exam in Salon Services, and all passed - many with Distinction.
September sees the launch of the new BTEC in Information Technology, with 10 learners already signed up to do the two-year course.
During July, we had a successful two-weeks work experience placement with four students from Woodlands Community College, who have worked very hard in revamping the classroom, corridor and the new engine room, and in doing so have managed to sign off two of their units with the evidence that they achieved.
The adult classes have been a little harder to get off the ground because of limited numbers attending the courses. However, this year we have reworked what is on offer, and will be launching some great bite size courses, such as "Know Your Own Car", Basic Plastering, Nail Art & Manicure, CLAIT, and many others, all with a chance to lead onto further accredited learning here at the Centre.
